Two checks, not one interchangeable limit
Delta's carry-on guidance, checked September 21, 2026, lists a maximum of 22 × 14 × 9 inches (56 × 35 × 23 cm) for individual sides and 45 linear inches (114 cm) combined. Handles and wheels count. Delta lists one carry-on and one under-seat personal item free, with exceptions and aircraft restrictions.
The examples below use inches throughout. They are arithmetic examples, not measurements of a tested suitcase or a promise of boarding acceptance.

A bag within all three inch limits cannot have a sum above 45 inches: adding those maxima gives 22 + 14 + 9 = 45. The reverse is false, as the 24 × 12 × 8 example shows. Therefore a smaller total never cancels an oversized side. Our earlier explanation incorrectly said that exceeding a side must also exceed the total.
Measure without mixing rounded unit columns
- Pack the bag, including anything that will go in its outside pockets. Close it in the shape you intend to carry.
- Measure the greatest outside height, width and depth, including wheels and handles. Record all three values and their unit.
- Compare each side to the corresponding published limit in that unit, then add the three measurements. Do not swap a spare inch of width for an extra inch of length.
- If the label gives only capacity in litres or a marketing size such as “22-inch cabin bag,” measure it yourself. A capacity figure does not describe the outside shape.
Rounding example: exactly 14 inches converts to 35.56 cm. That difference from the printed 35 cm column is not evidence that Delta rejects its own published 14-inch width. It also does not establish a tolerance for a larger bag. If your bag is on a boundary or the two columns give different answers, ask Delta before buying; use its airport size-check display when available.
A bag accepted on a previous flight is not proof for the next one. Compare your own packed dimensions rather than treating another airline's maximum box as the size of your actual bag. Leave room for pockets to bulge after shopping or adding a jacket.
Make a plan for the smallest aircraft on your trip
Delta warns that limited storage on Delta Connection services can require larger cabin bags to be checked. Its FAQ specifically flags aircraft with 50 seats or fewer. Confirm each operating carrier and aircraft; partner rules can differ. Ask where to collect a gate-checked bag and keep its claim tag.
Keep documents, medication and valuables accessible in your personal item. Under FAA lithium-battery guidance, spare lithium batteries and power banks must stay in the cabin when a bag is gate checked, with terminals protected against short circuit. Check the airline's battery limits before packing.
Do not buy a smaller suitcase solely because a regional flight may check larger bags: first determine whether your existing bag meets the dimensions and how the connection handles it. Conversely, paying for a fare or meeting the size limit cannot create space in a full bin.
