Before buying an adapter, read the input label on each charger you plan to take. Plug fit, electrical compatibility and airline battery rules are separate checks. Use this guide to decide what can travel as it is, what needs a compatible accessory, and what needs confirmation before you pack it.

Read the charger, not just the device name
An ordinary plug adapter changes the connection shape; it does not change mains voltage or frequency. Compare the charger's input voltage and frequency with the destination supply. A USB output label is a different specification. See Electrical Safety First's adapter guidance.

These are label-reading examples, not approval for a particular product. Photograph the label and keep the model number with your trip notes so that a manufacturer or retailer can answer a precise compatibility question.
Electric toothbrushes need their own check
Do not assume a toothbrush charger accepts worldwide voltage. Oral-B's travel guidance distinguishes charger voltage ratings and describes compatible overseas chargers. Check your exact base and handle model before choosing a replacement.
If the voltage does not match
Ask the manufacturer about a destination-compatible charger or appliance. A converter or transformer must suit the specific appliance, required conversion and load; it is not a universal fix for frequency or other compatibility limits. For a hair dryer or styling tool, confirm what your accommodation supplies before deciding to carry one.
Check the complete connection
A multi-country adapter does not establish compatibility with every socket or device. Some adapters provide no earth connection and are suitable only for double-insulated equipment, marked by a square inside another square. Equipment requiring earth needs an appropriate grounded connection. Do not remove an earth pin to make a plug fit.
Check the adapter's maximum current or power rating before connecting an appliance. Plug fit and a matching voltage range do not establish that the load is acceptable. Use the manufacturer's instructions if ratings are unclear. Electrical Safety First explains the grounding and rating checks.
Do not add a home power strip by default
A strip adds another product whose voltage, grounding and total-load limits must be compatible. Its sockets do not create extra power capacity. For several USB devices, consider a charger whose manual explicitly supports your destination supply and devices; check its shared-port output before relying on simultaneous charging. Do not stack adapters or power strips to work around a mismatch.
Before buying anything, ask your accommodation: “What socket type, supply voltage and frequency are in the room, and is a grounded socket available for this plug?” Attach a plug photo if needed. For several countries, make one line per stop; compare each with the adapter's supported destinations and instructions.
Power bank or installed battery: which bag?

If your carry-on is taken at the gate, remove power banks and spare lithium batteries before handing it over. Check your carrier's capacity, quantity, storage-location and in-flight use or charging rules for every flight. A permitted capacity does not establish permission to use a power bank onboard.
Record the actual battery rating
Use the printed watt-hour (Wh) rating. If only milliamp-hours (mAh) are shown, the calculation also needs the battery's nominal voltage: Wh = mAh ÷ 1,000 × V. The FAA explains this calculation.
For example, 10,000 mAh at a stated nominal 3.7 V is 37 Wh. This is arithmetic, not an airline acceptance certificate. Do not substitute a USB charging-output voltage or guess the nominal voltage. If the marking is missing or unreadable, obtain manufacturer documentation and ask your airline what evidence it accepts.

Two final checks
Can I use one charger for my phone and laptop?
Check the charger and device manuals for connector, charging protocol and available output when both ports are occupied. A matching USB-C connector alone does not establish that the laptop will receive the power it needs.
Does a packing list verify electrical or airline compatibility?
No. A list helps you remember items. The label, manufacturer instructions, destination supply and your actual carrier rules determine these checks.
