March and April are the best months on Mexico's Caribbean coast. Cancun's 2025 measurements show March averaging 29.2°C / 84.6°F by day with only 24.4mm (1.0in) of rain spread over 9 days, and April at the same 29.2°C / 84.6°F with 29.4mm (1.2in) over just 5 rainy days. That is roughly one wet day per week in March and barely one per week in April, against 203.2mm (8.0in) over 22 days in October.

The best months: February, March, April

The dry stretch is narrow and sharply defined. February runs 28.0°C / 82.4°F high and 22.9°C / 73.2°F low with 44.9mm (1.8in) of rain over 9 days. March warms slightly to 29.2°C / 84.6°F high, 23.1°C / 73.6°F low, and the rain total collapses to 24.4mm (1.0in). April holds 29.2°C / 84.6°F and 23.3°C / 73.9°F, with 29.4mm (1.2in) falling on only 5 days.

Look at what those numbers mean per rainy day. March's 24.4mm over 9 days is 2.7mm per wet day. That is not a rainstorm; that is a five-minute shower that passes while you are still deciding whether to move your towel. April's 5 rain days is the lowest count of any month in the record. If you have one week in Mexico and you want that week to be reliably dry, April is the month with the strongest odds.

The months to avoid: June, September, October

August deserves a separate note because its numbers are misleading if you only read the totals. What August actually delivers is a short, violent afternoon downpour on most days that clears within the hour, not continuous grey. June through November also overlaps the Atlantic hurricane season. The climate data cannot tell you whether a storm will arrive, but it can tell you the odds of a washed-out afternoon are already stacked against you in those months before any storm enters the picture.

Shoulder season: December, January, May

December is the other honest shoulder month: 27.8°C / 82.0°F high, 22.3°C / 72.1°F low, and 60.8mm (2.4in) over 13 days. That is 4.7mm per rainy day, so the rain is present but light. Late December is peak holiday pricing, so the value is in the first two or three weeks.

January is the weakest of the three. It is the coolest month at 26.8°C / 80.2°F high and 21.7°C / 71.1°F low, and it carries 93.2mm (3.7in) over 13 days, which is 7.2mm per rainy day. That per-day rate is heavier than July's. January rain arrives as northern fronts that can grey out an entire day and push wind onto the beach, which is a different experience from the quick tropical shower you get in summer. January is still a workable month, but it is not the reliably sunny winter escape it is often sold as.

What each season actually means on the ground

February to April. You will be outside all day. Highs of 28.0–29.2°C / 82.4–84.6°F with low humidity mean cenotes, Tulum, Chichén Itzá, and long beach days without needing to hide indoors from noon to three. Pack shorts, a linen shirt for sun cover, one light layer for 22.9–23.3°C / 73.2–73.9°F evenings and over-air-conditioned restaurants, and reef-safe sunscreen. You will not need a rain jacket in March or April. A packable poncho is enough for the one shower you might get.

May. Same wardrobe, but plan the outdoor archaeology for early morning. At 31.2°C / 88.2°F with almost no shade at ruins sites, midday is punishing. Two water bottles, a hat, and a 7am start changes the day completely.

June to September. You will be scheduling around the sky. The pattern is bright mornings, then buildup, then a downpour in the mid to late afternoon. With 24 to 26 rainy days a month, plan beach and boat time before 2pm and put museums, cenotes, and long lunches in the afternoon slot. Quick-dry clothes matter more than a raincoat, because at 25.3–25.6°C / 77.5–78.1°F overnight lows nothing you hang up will dry properly. Bring twice the swimwear you think you need. Mosquito repellent is not optional in these months.

October and November. October's 203.2mm (8.0in) and November's 116.4mm (4.6in) over 20 days mean you should build the trip around indoor and covered options and treat any dry afternoon as a bonus. If you go anyway, go for the food, the towns, and the low prices, not for a guaranteed beach week.
