Choose dates for the trip you want
Start with December to February if your priority is walking around Ho Chi Minh City in the drier part of the year. Treat this as a shortlist, then compare your actual flights, accommodation and must-do activities. No month guarantees a rain-free trip.
Vietnam Tourism describes December–April as the hot, drier season and May–November as the hot, humid, wetter season. Its mention of afternoon downpours is a broad pattern, not a reliable start time or duration for your travel dates. Read the official regional climate guide.

Check Tết and the actual total price
Tết can affect business openings and staffing. Confirm the holiday dates for your travel year and ask each booked provider about its operating hours. The tourism board recommends advance booking and patience with limited staffing during the holiday. Official Tết travel advice.
We have no verified cheapest month. Compare two real date combinations using the same room type, baggage allowance, airport transfers and cancellation terms. Include the cost of rescheduling your priority activity. A cheaper room alone does not establish a cheaper trip.
Build an outdoor plan with a usable alternative
- Choose the place, then check its hours. The official Ho Chi Minh City guide introduces sights such as the War Remnants Museum and Reunification Palace. Confirm opening times, ticket conditions and the indoor portions you want to see with the venue; a museum visit may still involve an outdoor transfer or queue.
- Pair nearby activities. For a city walk, choose a nearby indoor visit or café you can switch to. Keep the transfer in your plan rather than assuming you can cross the city quickly during rain.
- Check a local forecast before committing. Use the Vietnam National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting and your tour operator's updates. Recheck on the day. Monthly rainfall totals do not reveal rain duration, intensity or timing on your date.
- Treat day trips separately. For Củ Chi, the Mekong Delta or a boat outing, ask about conditions at that destination, covered transport, the weather cancellation policy and the return arrangement. A city forecast alone cannot confirm a route is operating.
Morning or evening is not a guaranteed comfortable outdoor window. Shorten walks or take an indoor break when conditions do not suit you. If a road or path is flooded, change the route; footwear is not a way to make an unknown flooded crossing safe.
A sample two-day arrangement
Day A: a short city walk plus a nearby indoor alternative. Day B: your priority excursion, if the operator confirms it can run. If the excursion can move, keep those days interchangeable. This is a planning example, not a tested itinerary or a promise that rain will fit between activities.
Pack for your route and laundry plan
- Every trip: breathable clothing you already find comfortable, sun protection, suitable walking shoes and a light layer if you prefer one indoors. Do not remove sun or rain items solely because of the month.
- Rainy forecasts: choose a compact umbrella or ventilated rain layer for your actual activity, protect documents and electronics, and carry a dry change where you need it. Check tour equipment rules; a loose poncho is not suitable for every activity.
- Religious sites: check the venue's dress requirements and include clothing that covers shoulders and knees if required. Pack that outfit once instead of adding a separate wardrobe for every stop.
- Laundry: count outfits until the first reliable wash and drying opportunity, then add the spare you need for a wet or delayed day. Confirm laundry access with your accommodation instead of assuming overnight drying.

Questions before booking
Does January guarantee dry sightseeing days?
No. A drier season is useful for choosing dates, but it cannot promise your particular days will be dry. Keep a forecast check and an alternative for the activity that matters most.
Must I avoid the wet season?
No. Decide based on your flexibility and the conditions for your booked activities. Do not interpret a rainy-day count as either continuous rain or a predictable short afternoon shower.
Can I apply this advice to Hanoi or a beach stay?
No. Vietnam has regional climate differences. Check each destination in the official regional guide, particularly when one trip combines the north, the south and an island.
Why is there no precise monthly weather table?
The earlier table did not identify its averaging period or dataset adequately. Open-Meteo's historical archive uses reanalysis, combining observations and models; it is not simply a table of direct station measurements. We have removed the unverified monthly figures. Read the archive methodology. Seasonal guidance is sufficient for this date-shortlisting task; use a dated forecast for near-term decisions.
