For a walking-focused Hanoi trip, shortlist October or November, then compare your actual dates. This is our planning choice within northern Vietnam's autumn window, not a guarantee of dry weather. If a Halong Bay cruise is the reason for your trip, make the boat operator's weather and cancellation arrangements part of the decision before booking.
Fixed dates can still work: choose the outdoor activity you most want, an indoor alternative, and the clothing you would need if the forecast changes. A city break and a cruise do not have the same backup options.
Hanoi season choices
The Vietnam National Authority of Tourism's climate guide describes these broad seasons. Month boundaries are approximate; check the forecast for the actual places you will visit.

June sits at a seasonal transition in the official guide, which also highlights summer rain. Treat the windows as orientation, not a daily weather prediction.
Hanoi city break or Hanoi plus Halong Bay?
If most of your time is in Hanoi
Put one priority outdoor stop in each day, with a nearby museum or café as an alternative. Check opening hours for your dates. Keep enough time between fixed reservations to change transport or wait out poor conditions without losing the next booking.
If you are adding Halong Bay
Check a separate bay forecast. The official tourism guide identifies April–June and September–November as options for Halong Bay, while winter mist and summer storms can affect a cruise; storms may cause cancellations.
- Ask the operator when it confirms sailing and how it contacts you if plans change.
- Read the refund or rescheduling terms for a weather cancellation, including any separately booked transfer or hotel.
- Decide what you would do in Hanoi if the cruise is cancelled. Avoid making a non-refundable onward connection depend on an unchanged sailing schedule.
These are booking checks, not a judgment that a particular sailing is safe. Follow local restrictions and the operator's current instructions. A Hanoi forecast or a city rainfall table cannot establish conditions on the bay.
A simple three-day outline to adapt
Example, not a booked itinerary: keep your arrival day in Hanoi, put the weather-sensitive outing on a day with room to change plans, and keep your departure day free of a tight boat-to-flight connection. If a cruise requires an overnight stay, compare the full transfer and boarding schedule before using this outline.
Turn the chosen dates into a packing list
- Cool or misty forecast: add a warm layer and a rain-resistant outer layer. Check the boat's exposure and the accommodation's facilities before deciding how much warmth you need.
- Hot or rainy forecast: choose comfortable lightweight clothing, rain protection and a way to keep essential documents dry. Leave room for a change of clothes if your day includes a long transfer.
- City walking: use shoes you can comfortably walk in; choose indoor alternatives before setting off.
- Boat or other organised activity: request the operator's equipment list and check what is provided. A generic city packing list is not a complete activity safety checklist.

Compare prices for your dates
There is no verified cheapest month in this guide. Compare the same room type, baggage allowance, transfer arrangement and cancellation conditions across two or three date options. Include the cost of the backup plan, not just the lowest headline fare.
If your trip overlaps Tet or another holiday, confirm current holiday dates, opening hours and availability with the services you plan to use. We have not verified current holiday schedules, hotel quotes or fares here.
Questions before booking
Is there a single best month for everybody?
No. October or November is our starting point for a flexible walking trip. Someone prioritising a warm-weather cruise, avoiding heat or travelling on fixed dates should use the separate choices above.
Does rainy season mean only a short afternoon shower?
No. A monthly rainfall total and count of wet days do not reveal rain duration, intensity or timing. Do not assume you will lose only an hour or that a full day will be dry. Use short-range forecasts and flexible plans.
Can last year's rainy-day count predict my trip?
No. One year is not a long-term climate normal or a probability forecast for your dates. Open-Meteo's historical weather documentation explains that reanalysis combines observations with mathematical modelling; it is not purely direct station measurement. This guide does not use an unverified one-year table to promise future conditions.
Can I use Hanoi's weather for Halong Bay?
No. Check the bay separately and confirm the sailing decision with your operator. Keep the cancellation and transfer arrangements available offline.
